The definition of conflict is a clash, when two forces oppose one another. In literature, this becomes the focal point of the story. It makes us want to follow the story to see how the main characters work to overcome challenges and obstacles or how they fail to beat them. There are five main types of conflict:
  • Man vs. Man
  • Man vs. Himself
  • Man vs. Nature
  • Man vs. Society
  • Man vs. Machine/Science

Thinking of the character you're assigned to, what types of conflict is he involved in so far in the novel? Click on the Discussion Tab for our page. On it, you will see a "Conflict Journal". Reply to my original prompt. Add details of the people involved in the conflict as well as information you know about it. Has it been solved yet? If yes, explain how. If not, predict how it will be solved. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ON THE PROMPT TO MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER COMPLETELY.

Now let's find some examples in our society.....
Below are links to some local and national news sites. Review articles to find examples of at least two types of conflict. Stay away from articles that simply provide sports scores or daily weather. Find ones where we can truly see two opposing forces. Then complete the journal on the discussion tab for the Current Events Follow Up.
